Jane Street has launched a podcast called Signals and Threads, designed to explore specialized engineering topics through candid conversations with its team members. The initiative grew out of the company’s need to adapt its public tech talks and campus presentations into a more accessible format amid challenges to holding in-person events.
The podcast format follows a straightforward approach: each episode features a discussion between the host and an engineer from Jane Street, focusing on their specific areas of expertise. Subjects covered in initial episodes include programming language design, clock synchronization in systems, the application of IP multicast in financial markets, and the complexities of reconfigurable hardware.
Although the podcast initially aimed to attract potential recruits—since hiring talent remains a key motivation behind the tech talks—Jane Street quickly realized that the content would also engage current employees and a broader technology audience. The first episode features an interview with Andy Ray, head of hardware engineering and creator of Hardcaml, a library for hardware design using the OCaml programming language.
The series plans to release new episodes every Wednesday morning, starting with a trailer published on launch day. Listeners can access the podcast through multiple platforms or directly on the dedicated Signals and Threads website. This move underscores Jane Street’s commitment to sharing technical knowledge while adapting to new communication channels.
