Recent college graduates in North Carolina are experiencing a tougher job market than the general population, with an unemployment rate for new graduates standing notably higher. According to data highlighted by ABC News, the unemployment rate for recent college graduates is 5.6 percent, exceeding the broader state unemployment figure.

The New York Federal Reserve has described this year’s job market for college graduates as “challenging,” reflecting a competitive environment where many entry-level positions demand extensive experience. This gap between education and available opportunities leaves graduates facing uncertainty as they transition into the workforce.

One recent graduate described the difficulty of finding stable work despite earning a degree from a well-regarded state university. With a Political Science diploma in hand and a significant student loan debt, she faces financial anxiety while trying to support herself independently. Her concerns include covering essential living costs such as rent, groceries, and unexpected medical expenses, all while navigating a market that favors candidates with diverse work experience.

Another graduate shared that despite submitting over 100 applications before graduation, securing employment was still a challenge. Although he ultimately found a job, it is not in his field of study, and he continues to search for a position aligned with his career goals. His experience reflects a broader trend among recent graduates who accept roles outside their specialization due to limited opportunities.
