Arcadia Mayor Eileen Wang admitted to acting as an illegal agent for the Chinese government, according to federal prosecutors. Wang allegedly coordinated with officials linked to the Chinese Communist Party to disseminate pro-Beijing propaganda in the United States while hiding her relationship with Chinese authorities.
Federal authorities revealed that Wang and an associate, Yaoning “Mike” Sun, operated a website disguised as a local Chinese-American news outlet. Instead, it served to promote narratives favorable to Beijing at the instruction of Chinese officials. Wang faces up to 10 years in federal prison as part of her plea agreement filed in court.
The Justice Department provided examples of Wang’s actions, including the rapid publication of pre-written articles denying accusations of genocide and forced labor in China’s Xinjiang region. Court documents describe interactions where Wang confirmed posting content and edited articles upon direction from Chinese officials. A Chinese government contact praised her work, with Wang responding in a manner indicating deference to the foreign leadership.
Prosecutors also connected Wang to John Chen, a senior figure tied to China’s intelligence apparatus known for attending Chinese Communist Party events and meeting President Xi Jinping. Court filings implied Wang maintained undisclosed ties to Chen during her tenure as mayor.
The case highlights concerns over foreign influence within U.S. political offices. Federal officials stressed that covert actions by individuals acting on behalf of foreign governments threaten American democratic processes. Wang’s guilty plea and plea agreement mark a rare instance of a sitting elected official admitting to such charges.
