India has positioned itself among the top contenders in the global race to develop AI data centres, drawing significant investments from international tech giants like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon, alongside major Indian conglomerates. These companies are committing billions of dollars to build AI-ready data centre infrastructure, fueling the country’s ambitions to be a leader in artificial intelligence technology.
Much of this investment focuses on coastal cities such as Mumbai, Chennai, and Visakhapatnam, chosen for their strategic proximity to undersea cable networks that facilitate high-capacity data transmission. Visakhapatnam, an economic center in Andhra Pradesh, stands out with Google pledging $15 billion and the Adani Group planning a $100 billion investment targeting a 5GW AI platform by 2035. These sites require vast resources, including electricity and water for cooling cutting-edge, heat-intensive computing equipment, as well as reliable power grids and fibre-optic connectivity.
Beyond coastal hubs, inland cities like Hyderabad and Pune are rapidly expanding their cloud computing and AI infrastructure, broadening India’s digital footprint and diversifying its technological ecosystem. This expansion reflects the scale and geographical spread of India’s digital transformation efforts.
The Indian government supports this surge through policies offering long-term concessional financing for developers and comprehensive tax incentives—tax holidays extended until 2047 for investments in green AI infrastructure—which encourage sustainable growth of the sector. These measures underpin a remarkable growth trajectory for the country’s data centre capacity, expected to reach approximately 6.5GW by the decade’s end.
With strong private-sector commitment, supportive governmental frameworks, and expanding digital infrastructure, India is on track to become a global AI powerhouse, ranking just behind the United States and China in competitiveness. This momentum signals a significant shift in the international technology landscape, placing India at the forefront of the AI data centre revolution.
