Congresswoman Ashley Hinson emphasized the vital role of renewing the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) to protect market access for American farmers. She stressed that maintaining free and fair trade with Canada and Mexico, two of the U.S.’s largest trading partners, remains a top priority for the agricultural community.
Hinson noted that discussions around updating the agreement offer an opportunity to address ongoing concerns. Key issues include dairy and poultry trade policies, which have faced challenges recently due to avian influenza outbreaks, and disagreements over genetically modified corn with Mexico. She advocates for resolving these matters comprehensively before the scheduled six-year joint review of the USMCA in July.
Although the former U.S. president indicated a reluctance to renew the trade deal, Hinson’s stance aligns with many agricultural groups seeking continuity in trade agreements that support farmers’ livelihoods. The renewal process is anticipated to involve negotiations that could refine specific sectors within the agreement, aiming to enhance fairness and stability in cross-border agricultural trade.
