Meta has introduced a new AI image generation tool called Muse Image, integrated into Instagram, that permits users to create AI-generated images using photos from public Instagram profiles. Anyone can tag a public account in their prompt to generate images featuring that account’s likeness through Meta’s AI, without needing explicit consent.
The feature automatically includes all public Instagram accounts in this AI content creation framework. Meta pitches this function as a way to personalize graphics, invitations, or collaborative concepts by remixing real photos found on Instagram. However, this means users’ images can be repurposed by others without prior approval or notification.
To prevent their images from being reused via this AI tool, Instagram users must manually adjust settings rather than rely on switching their entire account to private. Within the Instagram app, users need to navigate to their profile settings, access the Sharing and Reuse tab, and toggle off options labeled to allow others to use their Posts and Reels in AI features hosted by Meta.
Currently, some accounts may not yet see these options as Meta continues rolling out the update. Instagram’s help documentation clarifies that leaving the account public and default settings enabled permits others to generate AI content using their photos and videos. Importantly, users will not receive notifications when their images are used in AI creations, nor will previously generated AI content be removed even after opting out.
This rollout reflects a broader trend where major tech companies default to allowing AI training on user-generated content unless explicitly opted out by users. Meta’s approach contrasts with traditional content reuse policies by offering no alert system, prompting concerns regarding image rights and consent in AI-generated media.
