SpaceX has introduced a prototype of a handset-style device designed to revolutionize human interaction with artificial intelligence. The company previewed this slim device, reportedly thinner than an iPhone, to investors prior to its recent initial public offering, according to multiple sources cited by the Wall Street Journal.
The device runs on a proprietary operating system and incorporates AI developed by SpaceX's artificial intelligence subsidiary, xAI. Although still in early development and subject to design changes, the handset aims to embody the concept of an “everything app,” a multifunctional platform that integrates services such as payments, social media, and everyday utilities.
The “everything app” model, popular in parts of Asia, allows users to complete a range of daily tasks through a single interface. Elon Musk has pursued this vision since acquiring the social media platform X, with initiatives like X Money offering users capabilities from spending and saving accounts to various payment methods, including rent and wire transfers.
Reports indicate that the AI phone project stemmed from Musk’s frustration with existing smartphone ecosystems limiting third-party app control. Despite publicly downplaying the idea of building a traditional smartphone, internal efforts at SpaceX have moved forward with integrating AI to enhance user experience.
This development follows SpaceX’s recent strategic acquisitions in artificial intelligence. After absorbing xAI, the company acquired AI coding startup Cursor, which provides a widely used AI coding tool and a strong professional user base—complementing xAI’s computing infrastructure but lacking in a finished product offering.
While Elon Musk previously denied working on a phone connected directly to SpaceX’s Starlink satellite network, the current AI handset appears to represent a distinct approach—focusing less on connectivity hardware and more on advanced AI integration and software capabilities within a customized device.
