Facing a federal investigation ordered by President Donald Trump, Governor Gavin Newsom swiftly mobilized his fundraising apparatus, escalating his political war chest to almost $14.5 million across three interconnected political action committees (PACs). Key among these are the Campaign for Democracy PAC, the Campaign for Democracy Committee, and the Campaign for Democracy Group, all established in 2023 to bolster Newsom’s national profile and political operations.
The infusion of funds coincided with Newsom’s public denunciation of the federal inquiry targeting him, his wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom, and their associates, portraying it as a politically motivated effort. Yet, behind the scenes, his political machinery channeled the money into a sophisticated spending operation. Federal campaign filings reveal that the PACs have covered millions of dollars in digital advertising, polling, and consulting services while also supporting allied Democratic candidates.
Cash raised by Campaign for Democracy and its sister entities has been allocated to various strategic and publicity initiatives. Over $4.5 million went to the digital ad firm Aisle 518 Strategies, which managed large-scale outreach efforts, including a mass text messaging campaign exceeding $800,000 designed to support Joe Biden in the 2024 primary shortly before his withdrawal from the race. Consulting firm Bearstar Strategies, which works closely with Newsom, received approximately $350,000 during this period.
Beyond political advertising, the PACs financed Newsom’s recent book tour for "Young Man in a Hurry: A Memoir of Discovery," spending more than $1.5 million on venue rentals and purchasing copies of the book. Podcast-related expenses topped $90,000, and hundreds of thousands of dollars were paid to current and former staff members in the Governor’s Office via these entities.
By the end of March, the Campaign for Democracy PAC alone held $7.7 million in cash, which, when combined with the other two campaign entities, underscores a robust financial operation supporting Newsom’s ambitions. These fundraising efforts are widely viewed as groundwork for a potential 2028 presidential bid, enabling Newsom to maintain visibility and influence ahead of the national stage.
