Kyiv suffered significant devastation following a large-scale overnight assault launched by Russian forces involving over 70 missiles and nearly 500 drones. Ukrainian officials reported that the barrage targeted numerous sites across the city, hitting residential buildings, critical infrastructure, and commercial establishments.
The mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, identified the Darnytskyi district as among the hardest hit, where a nine-story apartment block partially collapsed, trapping residents under the rubble. Rescue teams continue searching for survivors, including a family with a teenage girl.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy detailed the scope of destruction, confirming damage to more than 20 locations, which included homes, an ambulance station, a research institute, hotels, and various businesses. First responders have been actively clearing debris and assisting those affected. Across Ukraine, more than 90 people sustained injuries in the coordinated attack.
The strike’s scale underscores a concentrated effort by Russia to apply pressure amid ongoing conflict; nearly half of the missiles launched were ballistic. Kyiv experienced damage in all its districts, with additional fires reported on rooftops in the Holosiivskyi and Shevchenkivskyi districts during the barrage. An air raid alert remains active as drone threats persist.
The Ukrainian government indicated the assault came in response to recent strikes against strategic Russian targets, including an oil refinery in Ufa and a military installation in the Penza region. These actions signal an intensification of hostilities as the war enters its fifth year.
A recent analysis by a U.S. think tank estimated total troop casualties exceeding two million since the conflict’s outbreak, with Russian losses disproportionately higher. The prolonged violence continues to inflict severe human and material costs on both sides.
