Federal investment in Ely’s water infrastructure and recent legislation repealing a long-standing mining ban promise to reshape the local economy. U.S. Representative Pete Stauber visited Ely City Hall to mark the allocation of funds for a critical water main project alongside local officials, emphasizing both infrastructure improvements and new mining opportunities.
The water main project addresses urgent needs for fire protection and drinking water reliability, key concerns for the community’s safety and health. Stauber’s meeting with Mayor Heidi Omerza, city clerk Harold Langowski, and members of the Ely Utilities Commission focused on advancing this essential utility upgrade, which received federal backing months earlier.
Stauber also celebrated the recent overturning of a copper-nickel mining ban in the region, a restriction that had stood for two decades. This legislative change revives the Twin Metals Minnesota mining project, opening doors for mineral extraction that was previously prohibited. Passed narrowly by the Senate, the bill represents a significant policy shift aimed at increasing domestic production of critical minerals.
According to Stauber, the new law ensures that mining operations will follow the highest labor standards and reduce reliance on foreign sources, particularly China. He expressed optimism about the economic impact, anticipating a surge in mining jobs and related industries, which could fuel regional growth.
The legislation also benefits other local initiatives, such as the proposed Pulsar Helium project near Babbitt, which had been stalled by the mining ban. Stauber underscored the strategic importance of these resources for everyday technologies—from smartphones to medical devices—and national competitiveness in emerging fields like artificial intelligence.
Local leaders joining Stauber at the Ely City Hall event included members of the city council and commissioners responsible for utilities, highlighting broad municipal support for the intertwined infrastructure and mining efforts.
