Regional School Unit 9 (RSU 9) has formalized a 10-year technology roadmap aimed at steering decisions on cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, classroom technology, and digital equity through 2036. The district’s board unanimously approved this long-term blueprint, emphasizing a strategic approach to technology as a core element of student learning and staff productivity.
Key priorities include bolstering cybersecurity defenses, ensuring dependable technology access for all students and staff, integrating technology into teaching and administrative processes, and enhancing communication across the district. The plan is designed as a guiding document rather than a budget-backed mandate for immediate changes, with current initiatives largely continuing existing efforts or planning for future fiscal years.
RSU 9 currently maintains a substantial technology inventory, including nearly 2,000 iPads distributed to students from grades 6 through 12, alongside MacBook Air laptop carts and desktop computers in classrooms. Since 2019, the district has been transitioning from classroom projectors to 4K televisions to improve visual learning environments, with all elementary schools now outfitted with TVs and ongoing transitions in middle and high schools.
The initial year of this plan does not anticipate major new technology acquisitions or upgrades. However, the district is exploring partnerships to enhance its cybersecurity capabilities, targeting fiscal year 2028 for potential collaboration with an external cybersecurity firm. Cyber defense remains a critical concern as recent incidents have involved phishing attacks and compromised staff email accounts.
As part of its prevention strategy, RSU 9 has been selected to implement KnowBe4, a security awareness training program funded through a state grant, aimed at equipping staff and students with the knowledge to recognize and respond to cyber threats. The superintendent highlighted the growing importance of cost-effective cybersecurity measures to safeguard the district’s expanding digital environment.
This long-term technology plan aims to provide clear direction for employees and stakeholders as they navigate the evolving demands of education technology, ensuring that investments align with goals to enhance learning, improve teaching effectiveness, engage the community, and protect sensitive digital resources.
