The mayor of Arcadia, California, has been formally charged by the U.S. Department of Justice for secretly acting as an agent of the Chinese government. Eileen Wang, who held office since late 2022, agreed to plead guilty to a felony count related to her undisclosed activities on behalf of the People's Republic of China (PRC), officials confirmed.

Federal authorities outlined that Wang operated under direction from PRC officials between 2020 and 2022, before her tenure as mayor, coordinating efforts to spread pro-China propaganda within the United States. Following these revelations, Wang resigned from her position promptly after her arraignment in a Los Angeles federal court. She faces up to ten years in prison for the charges.

Wang was elected to a five-member city council in Arcadia, a city known for its large Asian-American and Chinese population. The mayoralty rotates among council members, and Wang served as mayor after her election. Federal prosecutors emphasized the seriousness of the case, noting that individuals elected to public office must represent only the interests of their constituents and not undisclosed foreign governments.

The FBI's Counterintelligence and Espionage Division Assistant Director highlighted that Wang’s covert allegiance undermined democratic processes in the U.S. The investigation focused strictly on Wang’s personal conduct prior to assuming office, with city officials clarifying that local government resources and staff were not implicated.

Wang’s legal team acknowledged her acceptance of responsibility for her actions, expressing regret while reiterating her commitment to the Arcadia community. The city manager stressed that the charges concern behavior that ceased once Wang took office, underscoring the distinction between her private conduct and official duties.

This case reflects ongoing federal efforts to identify and prosecute covert foreign influence operations targeting American democracy, particularly involving individuals in positions of public trust.
