The Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker is set to announce a decision regarding the reunification of the two rival AIADMK factions following a significant political breakthrough. Both camps, led respectively by Edappadi K. Palaniswami and S. P. Velumani, withdrew legal petitions against each other and submitted joint representations affirming their unity within the party.

This development follows a series of reconciliation talks aimed at resolving internal disputes that had fractured the AIADMK. A key moment occurred when 14 MLAs affiliated with the Velumani faction traveled to meet Palaniswami in Chennai, offering written apologies and seeking reinstatement of party positions lost in the earlier split. Subsequently, they formally withdrew their support from the TVK-led government, signaling a shift in allegiance back to Palaniswami’s leadership.

Leaders from both factions then jointly presented themselves before the Speaker’s office to confirm their unified status. They retracted all prior petitions, including those concerning the appointment of the party whip, and submitted fresh requests to recognize Palaniswami as the AIADMK Legislature Party leader and appoint Agri Krishnamoorthy as the party whip.

During the proceedings, the Speaker individually called out the names of the MLAs who submitted these representations to verify their presence. However, senior leader C. V. Shanmugam, a prominent figure in the Velumani faction, did not appear before the Speaker in person, leaving ambiguity about the acceptance of his petition. Shanmugam has reportedly been hesitant to fully reconcile with Palaniswami’s camp and is currently consulting his supporters amid internal party divisions over his potential reintegration.

The Speaker’s pending verdict carries significant implications for stabilizing the AIADMK’s internal dynamics and consolidating its legislative leadership at a critical juncture in Tamil Nadu politics.
