The suspects were identified through a combination of physical and technical surveillance, revealing their involvement in sharing images of firearms on social media, possessing extensive criminal histories, and participating in illicit firearms incidents. Police conducted simultaneous searches across multiple locations in the capital, seizing evidence to support ongoing investigations. The detainees remain in custody while prosecutors pursue legal action.
This crackdown forms part of comprehensive security arrangements implemented throughout Ankara ahead of the summit, which will bring together leaders from all 32 NATO member states, as well as thousands of delegates, media personnel, and security staff. Authorities have placed a heavy emphasis on securing venues and surrounding areas, deploying around 70,000 security personnel to enforce safety protocols.
In addition to police operations, the Ankara governor's office imposed a temporary ban on all public gatherings—including demonstrations, rallies, and festivals—from late June until mid-July to maintain order during the summit. Strict traffic controls will also be enforced on key routes, especially near hotels, diplomatic zones, and summit sites.
