US military aircraft conducted strikes on Iranian missile and drone storage facilities, as well as coastal radar installations, following an attack on a commercial ship exiting the Strait of Hormuz. The operation aimed to deliver a clear message against what the US described as Iran’s unwarranted aggression in the strategically critical waterway.
The attacked vessel reported no casualties and proceeded safely along its route after the incident. The strikes were characterized by US officials as a measured retaliation rather than an escalation toward wider conflict. A senior defense source clarified the strikes were a direct response to the recent assault and did not signal a broader resumption of hostilities.
Earlier statements from President Trump accused Tehran of violating a recently signed ceasefire agreement that was intended to ease regional tensions. The incident and subsequent US retaliation represent the most significant challenge to that fragile understanding to date.
Iran has not publicly accepted responsibility for the attack on the commercial ship. Instead, Iranian officials reiterated their position that any passage through the Strait of Hormuz requires Iranian consent, a stance that appears to undermine the recent agreement. An Iranian diplomat emphasized that credible security arrangements must involve coordination with Iran as the coastal authority.
