Nolin Jeffery Maurer, 64, was charged Thursday in 2nd District Court with multiple counts of sexual abuse. The charges include individual counts of rape, forcible sodomy, and object rape, all classified as first-degree felonies. He also faces one count of forcible sexual abuse as a second-degree felony and three counts of distribution of material harmful to a minor as third-degree felonies. Maurer has been held without bail and remained in the Weber County Jail as of Friday.
Maurer worked for approximately five years as a custodian for the Weber School District, including at Snowcrest Junior High School in Eden. However, school district officials stated they believe the alleged sexual misconduct occurred outside school facilities. "We are not aware of any connection to Snowcrest Junior High School or other schools in our district," the district said in a statement. The district indicated it was proceeding through administrative processes regarding his employment status.
The investigation began on March 31 when the girl's father discovered journal entries describing sexual acts with an adult identified as "Nolin" and found an unauthorized phone in her possession. According to charging documents, the journal detailed incidents of rape, sexual abuse, alcohol consumption, and the receipt of gifts in exchange for sexual favors. Layton police conducted the investigation.
Investigators recovered communications on the phone between the teenager and Maurer, including requests for and exchanges of explicit images and videos, along with discussions of gifts and sex toys. A forensic interview conducted at the Children's Justice Center provided additional details about the context and circumstances of the alleged abuse, Maurer's manipulative behaviors, and the emotional impact on the victim.
Charging documents indicate the alleged incidents occurred in February and March at a home and in Pleasant View. Court documents do not specify the victim's exact age, noting only that she was 14 or older. District officials learned of Maurer's arrest on Tuesday.
