The Nevada Treasury commemorates 30 years of advancing college savings for families across the state, aligning its milestone with the annual National 529 College Savings Day. The event serves to underscore the importance of early planning for higher education amid steadily rising college costs nationwide.

In a bid to encourage families to start saving early, the Treasury will distribute gift baskets to babies born on May 29. Each basket includes a $529 gift certificate toward a Nevada 529 college savings account, providing newborns a financial head start in funding future educational expenses.

National 529 Day falls on May 29 annually and highlights the value of 529 plans—a tax-advantaged savings vehicle widely used by families to prepare for college costs. The Nevada Treasury has long championed these plans as flexible tools for affordable education funding, reaffirming its commitment to support residents with accessible resources.

State Treasurer Zach Conine pointed out that the Treasury’s dedication to helping Nevada families invest in their children’s futures remains firm after three decades. He emphasized that the best opportunity to begin saving is always the present.

To engage communities statewide, the Treasury will participate in multiple events offering information and incentives related to college savings:

  • A booth at a Reno Aces baseball game where attendees can learn about 529 plans and enter a raffle to win a $529 account contribution.
  • Free admission for the first 300 visitors to the One World Interactive Aquarium in Las Vegas, coupled with chances to win 529 account credits and access to expert advice from Deputy Treasurer Dr. Tya Mathis-Coleman.
  • Support events at Nellis Air Force Base’s Summer Salute, featuring 529 savings resources tailored for military families, hosted alongside Victory Capital.

The Treasury underscores that investments begun early gain significant growth potential over time, helping transform modest contributions into substantial college savings. These efforts aim to make higher education more attainable for Nevada families from infancy to adulthood.
