Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) edged closer to IPL 2026 playoff qualification after a tense win over Mumbai Indians (MI) at Eden Gardens, chasing down a modest target on a challenging pitch. Manish Pandey’s composed 45 runs off 33 balls and Rovman Powell’s aggressive middle-order batting proved decisive in the four-wicket victory that kept KKR’s campaign alive.

KKR began their innings assertively but lost an early wicket when impact substitute Finn Allen, filling in for the injured Varun Chakravarthy, was bowled by Deepak Chahar in the first over. Mumbai’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah then imposed tough conditions on the batsmen, conceding very few runs in his second over as KKR struggled to find momentum on the two-paced surface.

Despite the slow start, Ajinkya Rahane and Pandey accelerated the innings through the power play, taking advantage of a costly over from Bumrah to score boundaries and reach 31/1 after four overs. MI struck back when Corbin Bosch dismissed Rahane in the final ball of the power play, reducing KKR to 48/2. Soon after, the visitors appeared in control when Cameron Green took a sharp catch to remove a struggling Cameron Green, but KKR’s middle order fought back.

Powell’s powerful hitting shifted the momentum in KKR’s favor during the middle overs, although he narrowly escaped dismissal due to a missed catch opportunity off Deepak Chahar’s bowling. Meanwhile, Pandey provided stability by rotating the strike efficiently and punishing loose deliveries. His innings came to an end when Bumrah delivered an expertly executed offcutter, his first wicket of the match against Pandey in their T20 encounters.

KKR’s bowlers played an equally crucial role by restricting MI to 147/8. Cameron Green and Saurabh Dubey dismantled Mumbai’s top order early, removing key batsmen including Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav during a severe Power-play collapse. Green’s spectacular over-the-shoulder catch was a standout moment as MI slipped to 46/4 within six overs. A rain delay briefly interrupted play when MI stood at 57/4.

After rain, the KKR spin duo of Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy tightened the grip on the game, with Narine bowling economically and taking important wickets to stall Mumbai’s recovery efforts. Their combined pressure on the batsmen was vital in setting up the manageable chase for the hosts.
