As summer nears, a new WalletHub study highlights several U.S. cities where young adults can find some of the best summer job opportunities in recent years. Labor shortages nationwide have created a favorable hiring environment, pushing wages higher and expanding options for seasonal workers.

South Burlington, Vermont, emerged as the top city for summer employment, driven by a notable increase in seasonal jobs and a high number of temporary positions relative to its population. The city also offers short commutes, extensive health insurance coverage for part-time workers, and median annual earnings above $29,000 for part-time employees.

Following closely is Scottsdale, Arizona, which leads the rankings in median income for part-time workers at over $34,000 annually. Scottsdale benefits from robust employer hiring expectations and a plentiful supply of internships and part-time jobs available to younger job seekers.

Rapid City, South Dakota, ranks third, buoyed by one of the largest summer job surges in the nation. Low unemployment rates, strong labor force participation, and affordable commuting costs also contribute to a positive work environment where employees can maximize their summer income.

The study examined 182 cities, including the 150 largest plus at least two major cities per state, assessing both the youth job market and social environment. Twenty-one weighted metrics factored into their overall scores, reflecting pay rates, job availability, commute times, and quality of life for seasonal workers.

With labor shortages prompting employers to improve compensation packages and working conditions, this summer may offer unprecedented opportunities for young adults looking to earn extra income while gaining valuable experience.
