US Senator Mark Warner has pointed to tariffs introduced under former President Donald Trump as a major setback for the economic relationship between the United States and India. Warner emphasized that while strategic ties between the two countries have expanded, especially through partnerships like the Quad, trade policies have undermined recent progress in economic collaboration.

The Virginia senator highlighted India's status as a key geopolitical partner for the US and praised bipartisan efforts across administrations to strengthen bilateral relations. He noted that since the Bush administration, successive governments have sought to build a closer partnership with India, reflecting its rising influence in areas such as biotechnology and artificial intelligence.

However, Warner said the imposition of a steep tariff—cited as a 50 percent duty on Indian imports—had disrupted momentum in trade growth. Unlike China, India faced harsher trade barriers despite similarities in energy purchases involving Russia, which Warner described as an arbitrary policy decision that set back earlier advances.

Although there were signs of warming relations following a recent private meeting between Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G7 Summit, Warner expressed caution about the concrete outcomes of that engagement. He stressed that restoring the upward trajectory of trade between the two nations remained a vital objective, both commercially and strategically.

Warner also underscored the role of the Indian-American community in fostering these bilateral connections, calling it one of the relationship’s strongest assets. He described India’s emerging status as a future technology leader, particularly in AI and biosciences, positioning the country as an increasingly important partner for the US.

The senator’s remarks reflect concern over how past trade policies have complicated efforts to deepen cooperation and leverage India’s geopolitical and economic potential. He suggested that overcoming these hurdles would be essential to reestablishing a strong US-India alliance in both sectors.
