President Donald Trump indicated that the United States could soon reimpose sanctions on Russian oil shipments, signaling a renewed international focus on the Ukraine conflict at the Group of Seven summit held in Evian-les-Bains, France. This development comes as leaders aim to recover momentum in supporting Ukraine, months after Russia’s full-scale invasion sparked ongoing global tension.

A temporary easing of sanctions on Russian oil—which the U.S. introduced earlier this year to ease surging crude prices—may now be reversed as oil flows increasingly through the Strait of Hormuz. Trump told reporters that restrictions could return shortly, emphasizing that the recent resolution of the Gulf conflict allows the U.S. to redirect its attention back to Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy joined G7 leaders for a brief but decisive discussion on the war, affirming Ukraine’s commitment to peace and accusing Russia of insincerity in negotiations. Zelenskyy highlighted the unanimous support of the G7 for his country and emphasized the need for enhanced military aid, including the transfer and increased production of Patriot missile systems, which have proven vital in countering Russian missile assaults on Ukraine’s infrastructure and civilian areas.

While the U.S. has scaled back some aid under Trump’s administration, European nations, particularly France and other allies, have emerged as the principal suppliers of military and financial assistance to Kyiv. The summit also underscored a multilateral approach to pressuring Russia through coordinated sanctions.

In line with these efforts, the United Kingdom announced new sanctions targeting Russia’s “shadow fleet”—a collection of vessels used to evade Western restrictions by transporting oil and gas—and the financial networks that support these operations. This move aims to disrupt Moscow’s ability to bypass current sanctions and sustain its energy exports.

Trump tempered concerns about the domestic impact of the war, calling the conflict “ridiculous” but committing to do whatever is necessary regarding sanctions and support. With Iran’s conflict easing, the G7 has made a clear pivot back to Ukraine, underscoring the enduring international priority of addressing the ongoing war in Eastern Europe.
