Code4rena, a prominent platform known for its competitive smart contract audits, has announced its closure, prompting Immunefi—a major Web3 security firm—to absorb its clients and security researchers. This transition positions Immunefi as a key player in maintaining DeFi’s security ecosystem during a period marked by escalating attacks and breaches.

Code4rena pioneered a unique model where “wardens,” independent security researchers, competed to identify vulnerabilities in blockchain protocols in return for bounties. By integrating Code4rena’s community and audit framework, Immunefi gains access to a vast network of experienced white-hat hackers, along with established mediation and triage services that have facilitated over $135 million in bounty payments to date.

The announcement comes amid a wave of crypto exploits throughout 2026. According to DeFiLlama, total losses from hacks and scams across the crypto sector have surpassed $16.5 billion, with decentralized finance (DeFi) projects alone accounting for approximately $7.7 billion in losses. In April, nearly 30 incidents resulted in over $600 million drained, underscoring the urgency for robust security measures.

Immunefi’s takeover includes a commitment to smoothly transition Code4rena’s audit rules, reward systems, and operational scope, aiming to ensure continuity and reliability for clients and researchers alike. This strategic move highlights the growing demand for comprehensive vulnerability assessments and prompt incident response as DeFi becomes an increasingly attractive target for malicious actors.

The shift also marks a significant moment in the evolution of crypto security platforms, as Immunefi consolidates resources to better protect decentralized ecosystems against the rising tide of exploits, scams, and financial losses that characterize the current landscape.
