The Department of Justice has initiated a grand jury investigation into Neville Roy Singham, a billionaire tech entrepreneur based in Shanghai, amid allegations that he covertly financed a sprawling network of Marxist and left-wing organizations throughout the United States for over ten years.
Federal prosecutors in Manhattan have issued subpoenas demanding bank records as part of a probe into possible money laundering and other financial crimes linked to Singham’s contributions. The investigation, authorized by the Acting Attorney General, began several months ago and aims to clarify whether these funds breached US laws.
Singham, originally from Connecticut, reportedly channeled around $285 million through Goldman Sachs’ philanthropic vehicle and various shell companies before these monies reached nonprofit organizations, media outlets, and activist groups. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has been directly involved, meeting with Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon to discuss the probe and ensure the bank’s cooperation. According to sources, Bessent warned Goldman Sachs it risked implication in an alleged conspiracy if it failed to assist the DOJ investigation. Solomon agreed to cooperate, while Goldman Sachs emphasized that all Singham’s donations passed through legal nonprofits as verified by IRS standards and that the donor-advised fund in question closed early in 2024.
Much of Singham’s philanthropic activity appears directed toward radical social justice causes, totaling over $15 million, often routed through a Chicago post office box. Recipients include leftist protest groups opposing agencies like Immigration and Customs Enforcement in cities such as Minneapolis and Los Angeles. Congressional Republicans have linked Singham to more than a dozen far-left organizations, including the Party for Liberation and Socialism, the People’s Forum, and the ANSWER Coalition. Additionally, lawmakers have pointed out that Singham once shared office space with a group aligned with Chinese Communist Party propaganda efforts.
