The Port of Long Beach has unveiled a dedicated Cyber Defense Operations Center aimed at strengthening its digital defenses against frequent cyberattacks. Equipped with around-the-clock monitoring technology, the new facility enhances the security of multiple data networks essential to port operations and the wider supply chain.

Port officials revealed that cyber threats are a persistent challenge, with attempted breaches occurring approximately every three seconds. This center is designed to reinforce the port’s ability to detect and thwart such attacks promptly, preserving the flow of goods and sustaining economic activity.

The announcement came from Port of Long Beach CEO Noel Hacegaba during a public event attended by key figures, including the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners President Frank Colonna and U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral Jeffrey Novak. The event also highlighted collaboration between the port and local, state, and federal agencies on cybersecurity initiatives, reflecting a broader effort to protect critical infrastructure.

Hacegaba emphasized the importance of the center as a proactive step to maintain global supply chain stability amid uncertainties in international trade. He pointed out that the port experienced its third-highest April on record, moving nearly 818,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). While overall cargo volume declined slightly compared to the previous year’s record April, export volumes rose significantly, balancing import decreases.

  • Imports decreased by about 7.1% to nearly 390,000 TEUs.
  • Exports increased by 26.7% to nearly 119,000 TEUs.
  • Empty container volumes dropped by 12.6% to approximately 309,000 TEUs.

Given the volatility in global trade and supply chain disruptions, Hacegaba stressed the port’s role as a “safe harbor” capable of withstanding geopolitical and commercial uncertainties. The Cyber Defense Operations Center is a key part of this strategy, ensuring that critical data and cargo movement remain secure as the port develops into a more resilient and high-tech hub.
