Walmart will source approximately 176 megawatts of carbon-pollution-free electricity from the Dresden Clean Energy Center in Illinois through a pioneering nuclear power purchase agreement (PPA). This marks the retailer’s first direct deal to buy nuclear power, spanning two 15-year contract terms starting in 2029 and 2030.

A portion of the electricity, about 30 megawatts, will come from increased output enabled by efficiency enhancements—known as uprates—at the existing Dresden nuclear facility. Instead of constructing new infrastructure, the agreement taps into upgraded capacity at a plant licensed to operate into the mid-21st century.

This contract is one of the earliest between a major U.S. retailer and a nuclear power producer, reflecting Walmart’s strategy to secure stable, clean energy to meet growing demand at its upcoming high-tech perishable goods distribution center in Belvidere, Illinois, while contributing to regional grid stability.

Nuclear energy's role offers advantages for large consumers like Walmart: it generates reliable baseload power with zero air emissions during operation. This helps the company align with its climate commitments while ensuring uninterrupted operations for energy-intensive systems like refrigeration and warehousing. However, nuclear power development remains contentious due to concerns over radioactive waste, safety risks, and capital costs—challenges this deal does not directly address.

The Dresden plant itself supports over 1,100 full-time jobs and has licenses extending through 2049 and 2051, underpinning its long-term contribution to both local employment and energy supply. Through backing uprates at Dresden, Walmart effectively invests in expanding output from established infrastructure, avoiding the need for new plant construction.

Constellation, the plant operator, emphasized that this agreement extends beyond serving a single corporate client, highlighting its broader impact on sustaining jobs, enhancing grid reliability, and increasing emissions-free energy in Illinois. Walmart’s energy leadership echoed this, stressing their ongoing commitment to affordable, dependable, and clean energy solutions to fuel their business growth and community support.
